don’t stare at the artworks 
of richard c smith
they don’t like being looked at
hold out a right hand
slide fingery pads across papery itches
feel the features of the maker
under that ripple
hold out a left hand
a watersoft woodland of eyes, noses, mouths
when motherly cradled
cracks open its skin
these interlocked engineers
dispersers and re-assemblers
they communicate silence
but don’t stare, please don't stare
they don’t like being looked at
they’d far rather gaze up at you
